Log Home Addition
CLIENT OVERVIEW
Homes become members of the family, so many homeowners choose to expand their home rather than look for a new one. This little log home is one of the oldest in Big Sky, Montana, but these homeowners realized the need for more space and wanted to create an addition to expand their beloved home to meet the needs of their family today and for many years to come.
HOME DESIGN DETAILS
The addition to this home nearly doubles the previous square footage, encompassing a new master suite, two bedrooms with a shared Jack and Jill bath, a new larger laundry room, mudroom with room for skis and equipment, and a generous two-car garage. The conveniently located laundry room offers shelving for functionality and organization. One of the new bedrooms has a cozy window seat where visitors can take a moment to appreciate the secluded view. The added master suite is a retreat of its own with a corral board accent wall opposite the new modern fireplace, large steam shower, and walk-in closet. Outside, a stone path ties in the natural resources as it leads to the new main entryway flanked by a full-height stone accent wall. Careful consideration was taken to match the materials used on the exterior of the addition, creating a seamless transition from old to new. The fir siding and stone blend harmoniously to match the logs and chimney stone of the original home.
To keep costs within the clients’ budget despite a growing list of needs, this design was value engineered in close partnership with the contractor to remain within the target goal while still providing the clients with a home that suits their current and future lifestyles. Using innovative thinking and collaboration efforts, the design and construction teams created the perfect space to complete the clients’ expanded home dreams within their budget and timeline.
While apparent they needed a larger home, these clients also realized they loved the feel of their cute log home and didn’t want to leave it or the years of memories with their loved ones behind. With this design, the home and its owners remain together with more space to create precious memories.
